print What is a Psychologist?

These provider descriptions are general in nature and are being made available to help you better understand the various types and levels of behavioral health providers that may be available to provide your care. These general descriptions were prepared using national standards. Please note that provider requirements will vary from state to state, thus, you may want to check with the provider's office if you have any specific questions

Psychologist, Doctoral Level: For this type of provider, most states require a Doctorate from the psychology department of an accredited college and that the provider has passed a National Licensing Exam. Once licensed, in most states, they can supervise other counseling providers not yet licensed. Specific types of providers in this category are:

Psychologist (EdD)

  1. Has a Doctoral degree (EdD) in clinical Psychology or counseling Psychology from an Accredited college or university.
  2. Licensed to practice in the state where practice is to occur.
  3. Conducts therapy of various modalities such as individual, group, or family and is expert in psycho-educational testing

Psychologist (PhD)

  1. Has a Doctoral degree (PhD) in clinical Psychology or counseling Psychology from an Accredited college or university.
  2. Licensed to practice in the state where practice is to occur.
  3. May conduct therapy of multiple modalities or theoretical frameworks: individual, group, family, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavior modification, etc. Skilled in psychological testing
  4. Can be a specialist called a Neuropsychologist who specializes in neuropsychological testing.

Psychologist (PsyD)

  1. Has a Doctoral degree (PsyD) in clinical Psychology or counseling Psychology from an Accredited college or university.
  2. Licensed to practice in the state where practice is to occur.
  3. May conduct therapy of multiple modalities or theoretical frameworks: individual, group, family, cognitive behavioral therapy, behavior modification, etc. Skilled in psychological testing.
