If You’re a Parent Who Drinks

Addiction is called a “family disease” because drugs and alcohol take a toll on the abuser’s loved ones. Research has proven that children of substance abusers are at significantly greater risk for:

  • mental illness or emotional problems, such as depression or anxiety
  • physical health problems
  • learning problems, including difficulty with cognitive and verbal skills, conceptual reasoning and abstract thinking

If you're a parent who drinks, be sure that your use of alcohol falls within recommended health guidelines (no more than: two drinks per day for a man or one drink per day for a woman), doesn't impair your abilities, and doesn't worry or threaten those around you. Learning more is the first step to feeling confident that you won't harm yourself or others through your drinking; it is also the first step to getting appropriate help if you need it.
